A dramatic pinnacle fort climbed by open rock-cut steps carved into the cliff, next to Prabalgad near Panvel.
Kalavantin Durg, about 686 m near Prabalgad in Raigad district, is one of the most photographed and thrilling climbs in the Sahyadris - its final stretch is a flight of open rock-cut steps chiselled straight into a steep cliff with no railings. The trek starts from Thakurwadi village near Panvel, about 3 km up, and the exposed steps demand a head for heights and dry conditions, so it is avoided in heavy monsoon. The summit gives a giddy 360-degree view over Prabalgad, Matheran and the Mumbai plains.
