Overview
What makes this destination worth the journey.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's coronation capital, a hill fortress reached by 1,737 steps or an aerial ropeway.
Raigad, near Mahad in Raigad district, became Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's capital in 1674 when he was crowned king of the Maratha kingdom. Standing about 820 m above its base, it holds the ruins of the royal court, the market street, the Jagadishwar temple and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's samadhi. Visitors climb roughly 1,737 steps or take the Raigad ropeway, which reaches the top in about four minutes. It is as much a pilgrimage of Maratha history as a fort visit.
