Overview
What makes this destination worth the journey.
The Maratha Empire's first capital under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for 26 years, a sprawling hill fort called the 'king of forts'.
Rajgad, at about 1,376 m in Pune district, was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's capital for 26 years before Raigad. Its three fortified spurs (machis) - Padmavati, Sanjeevani and Suvela - and the central Balekilla make it one of the largest and most rewarding forts to explore in the Sahyadris. The usual base is Gunjavane village, roughly 60 km from Pune, and the trail is medium difficulty. Fit trekkers often continue on the classic Rajgad-to-Torna ridge traverse.
